Position

Scope:

 

Working within the Products Engineering – Technology team, the Mechanical Integrity Engineer will conduct static and dynamic assessments of nuclear product components and assemblies, and will contribute toward the development of methods and tools for this purpose. The product range includes steam turbines, heat exchangers, generators, pumps, and associated ancillaries.

 

Main Duties:

 

  • Assess components of steam turbines, heat exchangers, generators and pumps according to design criteria and work instructions, using a combination of numerical and analytical methods.
  • Cover complete work packages of mechanical integrity tasks, especially in the field of nuclear product components for projects, and product development programmes.
  • Propose, plan and execute Core Technology projects in conjunction with the head of the
  • Products Engineering – Technology department.
  • Follow and supervise subcontracted activities.
  • Identify deficiencies in design through analysis techniques, and propose improvements to design features.
  • Identify fields for improvement in mechanical integrity procedures, and actively identify and
  • specify mechanical integrity tasks in development projects.
  • Support development and harmonisation of tool sets, calculation processes and criteria to be used for all mechanical integrity analyses.
  • Undertake any other relevant duty and responsibility as may be reasonably required by the Line Manager.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Deliver high quality Mechanical Integrity analysis reports on time and on budget.
  • Ensure all models, calculations and reports are correctly filed and stored.
  • Participate in design reviews, customer meetings, and internal/external forums.
  • Operate according to the regulatory requirements of those bodies to which the organisational
  • unit wishes to be accredited, e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 17025.
  • Promote the interest and image of the company at all times.
  • Conduct all work according to Code of Ethics and Values.
  • Operate according to defined Environmental, Health and Safety instructions, following Company rules and local legislation.

 

Authority:

The Mechanical Integrity Engineer reports to the Local Mechanical Integrity Leader, and then to

head of Products Engineering – Technology.

 

Profile

 

Required Competences:

 

Job Specifics

  • Knowledge and experience of Ansys Mechanical and/or Abaqus Finite Element software.
  • Knowledge of Altair Hypermesh, and scripting using Ansys APDL, Python, or Fortran desirable.
  • Sound understanding of mechanical and thermal engineering principles.
  • Technical knowledge of rotating equipment (tubomachinery preferable).
  • Ability to produce high quality reports and presentations for audiences at all technical levels.
  • Understanding of failure modes, e.g. low and high cycle fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, erosion, buckling, etc.
  • Understanding of inspection techniques e.g. ultrasound, X-ray, magnetic particle inspection, etc.

 

Education & Training:

 

  • University degree in engineering or equivalent (e.g. by a combination of qualification and training).
  • Advanced University degree (Masters or PhD) desirable.
  • Experience
  • Ideally at least 2/3 years’ relevant experience in an engineering office (energy, oil, aeronautics,
  • special machines).
  • At least 2 years’ experience using finite element software.
  • Experience of assessing to published codes (e.g. ASME, EN, DNV, USNRC, CODAP) advantageous.
